alright then we'll get started so a brief intro cuz you guys don't know us my name is Miss gallo and a college access counselor with commonpoint Queens offer Van Buren High School and queens High School of teaching and I miss laureano I work at Forest Hill High School oh and also John bowne high school as well so I am on another College access counselor for commonpoint queens and yeah we're just going to go over some information that you may or may not know about what we're going to talk about yeah it should be informative Amelia salvia I didn't realize I was needed the entire time and just don't know okay okay alright thank you yeah so so yeah would like you to participate if you can but yeah we're going to go or going to prison so I'm going to share my screen and we're going to go over the Powerpoints and again just make sure I know there are more students trickling in right now so just make sure I'll for those who just joined make sure you are filling out attendance form it is it is it was just put in the chat so make sure you are filling that out that way we can send you these resources again if you do not fill it out we won't be able to sign you all this PowerPoint so we will get started feel free to either come off new or write your questions in the chat if you have any and either me or miss Gala will be able to answer. For you all right awesome so I'll be leaving the first part of this presentation and then I'll be turning it over to miss Mariano so as you mentioned before today's topic is interview skills I know this can be a very anxiety can do staying on task and putting in interviews can definitely cause a lot of stress and a lot of questions a lot of us don't know what to do on interviews or how to prepare for them so today we are going to walk you through the entire process what is it basically just lay out the groundwork for you to be successful and prepared for an interview so please as Miss Morgana said please ask your questions please we definitely want to hear from you so we want to be able to support you as fast as we can are you going to share your screen yeah. Right now okay all right so interview skills so this is it going to be top of the really good time to do this as summer is approaching and a lot of your granny looking for summer jobs or employment coming up so last time we talked about resume writing and how to compose a resume now we're focusing on putting that resume to work and really getting your foot in the door and a scene that interview so you can go next thank you so we're going to discuss something are interviewing we're going to discuss what interview is a lot of us have heard this buzzword and heard this term but really not sure what that actually means what that looks like we're going to discuss what happens before an interview what you should do to prepare for an interview what happens during an interview and then what to do after an interview so this is a process it's not just showing up and then end it when it's over and over that swapping us back going to it and then after that we're going to be discussing some sample interview questions and discuss how we can best go about answering those questions do we have a short video I think it's actually pretty entertaining so we are going to watch the video and I'm looking forward to her your thoughts actor unmute the Soriano Kimberly and she is a recruiter for 20 years and she's going to help us dream job that you want to get I wouldn't do that understand for the interview you are just want to make sure I say everyone but the majority of teams are asking me okay so I have my resume but how do I repair what do I need to do to prepare for the interview so I did some research and did some digging and I found delay call Kimberly how long have you been in the recruiting business I graduated in 2002. try to tell you but you know this is good because she's going to really help us and give us some steps on how you need to prepare because check this out when you come see you first you will sit down with someone like her your very first interview at whatever job will be someone like her and so she's going to help us out so we're talking a little bit about Freya what does Brandon mean is Billy Joel bald watching knows what branding mean so Chick-fil-A what is their brand I think about quality service on whenever you're at Chick-fil-A as the organization they always say when it when they take your order or whatever they're doing the website they are identifying what's the brand what is the company is known for so we got Grand number to what would you say about us on their website someplace where it talks about the organization most time the about us it talks about the history of the organization like when the company started who started the company if the company was acquired by another company all those things possibly what the about us is so you get to learn a little bit about the history how they started in The Branding one about us history number 2 say probably you want to ask him I'm going to take that one down so when I think about questions this is an opportunity for you to learn a little bit about maybe an organization someone in leadership or on that leaves the company itself weather or learn a little bit more about what the company does like what is there specific products who do they sell to those type things do those type of things that you want to dig in on and learn how that's going to affect you doing I'm preparing you also wanted just not research but you also want to bring a portfolio for a teenager college student portfolio when I think about bringing a portfolio resume or whatever a lot of work a filled up so at least copies of your resume or cover letter to share with other people in the room in case you're interviewing with the number but also that portfolio shouldn't what is that you're actually taken down formations that you can follow up on you know to make follow-up question do something so that is what I mean by a portfolio so that I can show that you're in what are some key things that they need to be preparing for prep get home for the interview. I'll communication when you I think that's important the type of handshake a lot of times people say the stronger your handshake is more secure you are shows a sign of confidence that you're not nervous or anything like that so you know number one communication and we've already talked a little bit and spoke a little bit about eye contact but just make sure that you're continuing to do that because you could be like in the room with the number people so that you're making contact everyone in the room so that is some of the nonverbal communication and shaking and nodding of the head as you go through and you know to show that you agree or you know what you disagree that's Morgan on verbal communication but just different to show that you're engaged in the process opposed to this interested in what's going on you know practice saying hello hello sir would it be it's good no none of that too we're seeing those flame Blessed Be the manager there may be using some say do you recommend since they're doing it student does it too no I think you always professional self that's important that I'm regardless of what they are doing because they're already in the job you haven't gotten a job yet cells and state polish throughout the interview cuz you can never go wrong being to polish but you can go wrong being under polish sweetheart we have a resume just two copies copies for the resume or just one I mean a lot of companies do panel interviews right now and sometime you can have four or five people in the room with them arrive early to the interview or should they be there just right on time and what do you recommend I have I have like my suggestion is always arrive 15 minutes early meaning interview you're late as it as an interviewer and you interview hundreds of people throughout the year what do you recommend what do you think is is it is appropriate early it isn't good enough for an organization because I think that's enough time that showing that you are definitely on time but we have a lot of great stuff here that Kimberly went through is what I want to do is I want to practice with Kimberly side note I'm not dressed for an interview this is just a practice right we going to show you that dress pants hey Kimberly how are you man can you get that appointment McKinley again thank you so much for having me I'm telling I'm so excited to work here their thoughts on the video it was informational definitely who is the gestational because this gives us things like a proper preparation not to how we're going to preserve our jobs back what not to do caring for job interviews so I know it was a little but I hope that this definitely made you guys they really think that Anthony O'Neal is really really entertaining as well but a lot of great information in there so we're going to discuss a little bit more in-depth ultimately you definitely want to arrive early so Anna video between 10 to 15 minutes early I would agree that if you arrive on time you are indeed late so you definitely want to be there in 10 to 15 minutes early oftentimes I want interviews especially in person you don't know where you're going and I think from your area on location to definitely allowed time or you know incidental so to speak so if you ride in the building it might take you 10 minutes to go the officer interviewing a right the train or the bus might be running late in case things are running behind schedule and if you want someone to put your phone on silent do you want to don't want to be in a situation where your phone is ringing during an interview in death we don't want to be taking a phone call during an interview and you definitely want to be fully present and engage need to be processed and full attention on the person you're speaking to you want to be friendly to everyone so sometimes you might be greeted by a receptionist or someone from the organization or company that's all I'm helping out or is or letting the interviewer know that you're there whatever the case maybe leave a great impression on everyone want to extend a handshake when introducing yourself for meeting new people so we talked about a lot about this before covid kind of standard procedure now with the pandemic I would argue but not everyone's comfortable giving a handshake song ask anybody to do something if you're not comfortable doing but typically pre covid pandemic it was pretty standard and professional to get a handshake and introduce yourself right post covid and Asthma are coming out of this pandemic and things are start loosen up and the restrictions are starting to eat more people may be more comfortable with handshakes if you are not comfortable you can possibly give an elbow some people are getting an elbow and like album be each other as a greeting you can just not do anything and just introduce yourself and approved at the post office and make eye contact when speaking other than one being spoken to Simply is simple eye contact off in time shows that you're engaged and shows that you are active and active conversation right so I know you guys can all see me right I'm on camera if I was talking to you guys but I was looking away or looking out the window or daydreaming you guys are probably think that I'm thinking about something else and then I didn't want to be here right now right so again I contacted really important if you're going on a virtual interview right you want to be looking into the camera and if you are going or virtual interview you want to make sure that your camera is at an appropriate level is not too low to high you want to make sure that it's appropriate some books or something underneath your laptop to get rid of the appropriate height you don't just like your head brain could do that for your in a silent place I know why what's up are still at home doing remote learning working from home and make sure that you have an appropriate setting home you know you want to be sitting off you definitely don't want to be laying in bed taking an interview we're laying down you know we want to make sure you have an appropriate. Just want to make sure to bring extra copies of your resume that they spoke about it during the video that's really important often times you made meet with more than one person on the interview so you mean someone initially and they may have you meet with someone else or panel interview which means that there are several people interviewing you for the position okay so what is an interview so an interview is a conversation between a job applicant and a representative representative of an employer right so basically I'm from the company or organization giving you the opportunity to prove yourself and give us a picture of you right too often times they might be asking you different questions and you definitely want to highlight all the amazing things about you and ultimately why you're qualified for a position the two-way street and what we mean by that is also is your determine whether you want to work for an organization so the conversation allows you to get your sales pitch of you end this way all the amazing things about you to an employer chocolate before there is things have to be done before you go to a job interview so to prepare for a job interview do your homework right research the company an organization that you're interviewing with research about us section and research what they stand for you really want to be educated the company is in what they do right if you're walking into from simple Hollister looking for a job as a sales associate and you go in and they ask you what is Hollister and you said it at start a frozen yogurt place that might blow your shot of getting in the job right what are some basic things about the company was style where they stand for definitely don't want to go in and not know anything about the information from beware of their mission and what they do again I can be found on the company's website you also wants to determine the location of an interview before you go right to figure out how long it's going to take you to get their figure out how much time you need to know where to travel and guess where you have to go how you going to get there so you taking the bus or you getting a ride are you driving yourself how's parking near the interview all these things have to be taken into consideration is it located on a campus right so is there going to be extra time for you to get to the front door as it is to get to the location of the interview right do you want to plan for all these things and leave yourself plenty of time and then last to prepare for the interview and before the interview you want to make sure you pick out your outfit so what are some things that you guys think appropriate to wear on an interview something which is very farmer shirt and tie my shoes you need to like have your nails done the point to a lot of the answer that we received were very formal which I would definitely support definitely agree with Angela made a good point and asking it depends on the job you're applying for that is true as well and someone just wrote so all of you are correct but my recommendation no matter what job you're applying for I'd rather you guys be overdressed than underdressed what I mean by that is a rather you guys be a little too formal or Wesson maybe a little too formal then to walk in underdressed or under prepared right so so depending on what job you're applying for there can be different things you can wear the bottom line you guys should all wear appropriate and your Sunday Best so to speak right it's too revealing these guys same thing you are make sure that you're wearing something appropriate only pants dress shoes even a polo or down and grandmas I don't want anybody to be underdressed for an interview or we can go to the next five please thank you little Family Feud dress to impress what where you can wear a button-down shirt a sweater or cardigan dress pants khakis or a skirt for our female closed toe shoes loafers or ballet flats no open-toe shoes or no optional sandals you also want to make sure that you're well groom someone said trimming your nails making sure your hair is neat and all that is taking care of things you should not wear ripped or bleach clothes even those might be spending and and cool hang out with friends or whatever you definitely do not want a job interview nothing too revealing so you want to make sure meeting now no hacking phones or airpods one exception to that is if you are taking a virtual interview I think it is appropriate if you need to have headsets on Virtual setting otherwise if you are going to be in person too you take out the headphones before you even enter the space you don't often times on that could be seeing or having headphones and can be seen or interpreted as you're not interested or you're engaged and whatever the other person is saying right definitely remove the headphones are airpods and what not to wear sneakers so I would argue you know if you have a nice pair of sneakers that you don't have any other clothes toed shoes definitely can wear them but make sure that they are nice sneakers that are all white or black nothing too crazy and colors no tie dye has no crazy Prince and make sure that they're not your gym sneakers either right because they could be worn down down or make you look like you're not prepared to do so again if you have a nice pair of sneakers again all white black that they're in really good shape and you don't have closed toe shoes I would say that's okay but you definitely do not want you bring or where your old rat Egypt Rachel ultimately you wants to dress to impress again rule of thumb I'd rather you guys be overdressed than underdressed ultimately again you want to make sure that you're presenting your best self also on this list. Here is a polo as well a polo shirt you know the three buttons and a little collar that's fine to ultimately Sunday best as I mentioned before Arthur is a good visual as to what your interview attire is saying about you so I can see we have the  the left who is in a business suit business skirt a jacket button down shirt tie and dress shoes and a little portfolio and her hair is tied back and she's been sitting up straight ready for an interview on the right hand side we have someone that looks a little bit more relaxed she looks very comfortable in the chair and she's wearing pink high heels or midriff is out her shirt line is a little bit lower a leather jacket there's something wrong with this outfit it just might be suited better suited for a different environment may be going out with friends or going out you know to a barbecue or something you could definitely tell the difference between these two outfits and you can definitely see what it is saying about this person and and the and the appropriateness for interview right do you want to make sure that you are dressing on the more conservative side and again rather you will be overdressed than underdressed on this town for in this type of thing is in an interview right so you definitely want to be more conservative professional again nothing wrong with the outfit on the right but again it does say a lot about the impression you're leaving on the interviewer and now I'm going to turn it over to miss morning hi guys so we went over what you want to do before the interview now we're going to go into what you should do during the interview so stage one that would be the end Dakshin so as you saw in the video earlier there was you know an intro where you meet the interviewer and then the interview where would ask you so tell me about yourself play the introduction where you kind of go into you know who you are in a little bit about you so that would be stage 1 of that interview process and then stage 2 would be basically the gist of your interview that would be the question-and-answer so that's when the interviewer is asking you a list of questions and you are answering it and you know the interviewer is listening to your responses that would be probably the long part of the interview so you want to make sure you are listening when they are asking you those questions and you are answering their questions and then stage 3 so after they've asked you all of them questions are going to also ask you so do you have any questions for me that's usually a staple of the interview they do ask you that for the most part and you don't want to say no you want to make sure you have one or two questions for them because it kind of shows that you are interested so before to interview you want to make sure you do prepare by maybe listing one or two questions that you would like to ask during interview on sometimes when they are introducing let's say the organization to you they may even answer that question but it is good so you know have a question so maybe one question would be what is the typical workday for person in this position right so that would be a good question to ask the interviewer and interview will be able to kind of tell you what you should expect if you are hired and how your day would look so that would be one example of a question you can ask them and that would be stage three of the interview and then the last stage would be the closing next steps what Xbox so then after they've asked you their questions and you ask them your question then they're going to say okay well these will be the next steps you will hear from us in the next week or two so on and so forth and then that would be basically the end of your interview so that would be during the interview okay and that's basically the first impression that you are making first impressions are super important so that interview is your first impression so you want to make a great impression so there's a question here I just wanted to ask to see if any of you knew the answer if you don't that's fine in a survey of more than 2,000 hiring managers what percentage of them claim to know whether or not they would hire someone within 90 seconds what was that prnt okay I got it I got one D15 getting different answers so the answer is actually be 33% so we just kind of get this shows you that. First impression already made up their mind for that. Insert Wonder I'm sorry that's wondered of the 2000 yeah yeah pretty much so yeah it is 33% so first and actions are determined by the way you dress up and walk through the door so that's why I as we mentioned earlier it's so important to make sure you do have an appropriate attire for an interview you know because as humans humans do judge and that's how they will be judging you for this job so one way they will you know try and see whether you would be a good fit is also the way you dress is. Kind of gives a first impression the quality and tone of your voice also so some people may be soft-spoken and low spoken but you do want to make sure if you are too kind of check your voice a little bit more that way they can you know you come off as a more I guess it depends what job you are applying to but you know you want to make sure you are sounding a little more louder you are projecting your voice to come off a little more confidence because. Can also determine their first impression of you especially for the job so let's say the job requires you to be very social they may not hire if you seem very you know quiet and low spoken so it does also depend on the job as well but you do want to kind of come off as you are confidence and what you're saying and your skills for a job sign language grammar and word choice so that is really important so in the video kind of went over the importance of not using slang you know making sure you are speaking in full sun it says your word choice is also important so these are all important factors that you want to be aware of when you are making. First impression when you are in that interview so there are common interview questions that they're most likely going to ask you so they do like to start off with tell me about yourself so in that case you would you know I know a little bit about you whether your students you let them know I go to school here I'm in Junior and senior I'm planning to go to college and study such a massage so you want to you know give them a little brief in love you before they get into the more specific questions for the job they are going to ask you what are your strengths and weaknesses most of them do and you want to be prepared so these you're you want to make sure you have an answer to so what are your strengths and weaknesses you want to talk about your strengths and you also want to mention a weakness one common one would be a white work too hard or don't give myself enough credit. Can bees in a way that's a weakness but it's a positive weakness so in a way you don't want to say oh oh I'm really bad at multitasking I know you don't want to say that you know you want to make sure whatever weakness you are saying is something that can have a positive turn on it so how would others describe you what do you do when your free time tell me a all your past experiences a work volunteer school so that would probably be something that they see on your resume so maybe they'll look at your resume briefly and tell you to talk about that experience. the second job or at that you know whatever you did your extracurricular activities that you have on your resume or anything like that so that would be the main questions that they would ask and then why do you want this job so as we mentioned earlier researching the organization or the company that you are interviewing for is so important because you can be able to use the information you find from there to answer disc why do you want this job because when you answer that question you kind of will give them an idea of what you're interested in and also give them an idea that you did to your research and you know what that working is Asian is about this is why you want to work there so but yeah so these are just some very common questions that are asked and before the interview you do want to prepare and you want to make sure you know you have any you have an answer for all of these questions just in case they do ask you so how to best answer these questions so you want to review those questions before the interview and pray this reciting your responses cuz that will help when you are answering those questions so make sure you are reciting those responses you know to yourself for the day before or two days before the interview I know you want to answer in complete sentences as well and you want to refrain from using slang just because it's you know you're in an interview you want to present yourself as professional so yeah you. want to refrain from using any slime and also just makes a just a side note even if the interviewer seem super chill and super laid-back and relaxed you still want to make sure you are presenting yourself professionally because you are the one being interviewed not them so even if they are using slang or they are you know they're they're very relaxed I'm you still want to make sure you maintain a professional your professional self in that way so, nonverbal mistakes made during job interviews so these are very you know Common still failed to eye contact so that's a big one when you are speaking to the person and when the person is speaking to you you want to maintain eye contact you don't want to look away or look at your hands or anything like that because it kind of comes off as if you are uninterested or if you're not paying attention and you don't want to come off that way even if you may very much be paying attention but they don't know that I'm so you want to make sure you do maintain eye contact or have little knowledge about the company that's also another mistake that's why it's so important to make sure you do your research ahead of time that way you know a little bit about the company or the organization so if they do ask you a about it you are able to answer it another common nonverbal mistake is when you don't smile when you have bad posture and when you fidget too much I'm so you may not even realize that you were doing this are you are not doing this but that's why it's so important to have that self-awareness of your body of your facial expressions all of that because it can let you know make a difference on how you are Steve in the interview so make sure you are being self-aware of all of that that way you know you want to make sure you have good posture that you're not fidgeting and are you are you know smiling just to show that you are friendly you are like a bull that would give a more better first impression for you so as I said I'll just now self-awareness so that's just super important for anything you do it how about more so during the interview because you may not be able to see yourself you know even if it's an in-person interview you're not going to see how your you know acting were how you look do you want to be mindful of yourself when speaking common words that we say but may not mean to would be like I'm like so try to refrain from those words and you also want to be mindful of body language so your facial expressions cross-arms slouching you want to be mindful of all of that just because it's you know what you have crossed arms it kind of comes off the little standoffish if you're slouching you can't you may seem a little uninterested and your facial expressions you want to make sure you you know are aware of your facial Jensen you're not making any faces to anything that you may you know may or may not agree with or anything like that so you just want to be self-aware of how you're presenting yourself so well actually skip that one OK Google so we went over during before the interview during the interview and now we're going to go over after the interview so after the interview you want to make sure you do send the person you interviewed with a thank you email because that can definitely go a long way so you want to make sure you are doing that so I will show you an example of how to go about doing that so when you are emailing you want to make sure you are using your professional email address and the subject could be just the simplest IQ and then this is an example of the email you want to send so you wanted to be short and sweet you don't want to go into writing paragraphs that's not what they want that's not what they want to read that's if it's too much to read it we won't read it so make sure it's short and sweet so this one is thank you for taking the time to meet with me today but before that you want to say Dear Miss Smith dear mr. Webber you interviewed with I need a Time thank you for taking the time to meet with me today it was a pleasure learning about and then you'll put the position title at and then company name I believe that I will be a great addition to the team and I'm very excited about this opportunity thank you again and I look forward to hearing from you since your Lee your name so that's just as simple as you want your thank you email to be and you want to maybe send this no later than you know 24 hours after your interview so if your interview let's say it was Monday morning you can send this email Monday afternoon so or if it was you know late Monday evening or late Monday afternoon you can send it the following day Tuesday but you don't want to wait too long to send this email and then after that you wait patiently you're back so sometimes they may not even get back to you so you one of maybe send your first follow up email 5 business days after the interview if you weren't told when to expect feedback so if they never told you when you're supposed to get back to you then you can send a follow-up email five business days after the interview but if they told you yeah we'll get back to you in 3 weeks don't send them a follow-up email 5 business days later because they did tell you it will take 3 weeks so it all depends when and if you were told when you'd be expecting feedback okay so if the employer provided you with an expected time frame for a decision wait at least one additional business day be on. So and if you are sending. follow up email you want to make sure you are greeting them you know by their first name say that you know you're just following up in regards to the job you interviewed for but you do want to be specific you want to make sure you were letting them know the day the job title that you interviewed for the date all of that because they may have been interviewing many many people so you want to make sure you are being specific and die reaffirm that you are still interested in the position and excited too excited about what you learned and that you're eager to hear about the next steps then ask for an update tell them any information they can provide. appreciated that you're looking forward to hearing back from them so again you want it to be short maybe you know three four sentences that most and then you want to finish by saying thank you and signing off your first and last name do you want to keep it short to-the-point and well space and you want to proofread it before you click that send button so just keeping that in mind because a follow-up email it shows that you are interested and that's what they want to see they want to see that you are interested and you want to be hired for the job so so yeah so that's you know that's also very important if you are very interested in and you still haven't heard back I'm definitely make sure you are sending up that follow-up email when it is appropriate and that's pretty much it for our presentation does anyone have any Gents question I have one so actually when I went over to the when I went over to my interview for the job so I was nervous and almost like a little bit sweating my voice was shaking so I was Wonder how to avoid those things and be confident like yeah I'm going to be there and if I don't get the job it doesn't matter no like I mean that I do when my wife doesn't shake yeah no that's a great point because pretty much everyone all of us would be nervous at some point when doing an interview and that's completely normal it's just more so about how you're handling it right so one way to kind of make sure you are are not so nervous is making sure you are prepared because the more prepared you are the less nervous you'll be because you'll feel confident enough to answer those questions because you already paired and you practice how you're going to answer them so yeah I mean there's not there's nothing that can take away those nerves just because that is a normal body reaction. We all are going to go through when we are inter but yeah you just want to also kind of see the interviewer as a person just like you and say they've been through the same thing they've been through interview process just like you so it's not you know keeping that in mind what kind of maybe put your mind at ease knowing okay this person is you know has done this before and even the interviewer day understand that you are and that you are nervous that that is normal probably been there themselves so so yeah just making sure you are prepared that you are presenting your best self and you know just knowing and also having that attitude. Even if you don't get the position it's not the end of the world there are many other jobs out there that will most likely hire you eventually so yeah just keeping that in your mind. It's fine. You know you're not a failure even you don't get the job because yeah a lot of but you know you're going to eat here a lot of nose then you will yes it is in life especially in jobs and that's fine so it's just something that you know you you want to keep in the back of your head but yeah I definitely agree with everything you just said I think a way that can help the nerves and stress and everything is you preparing as much as you can and I think like Smith or an appointment really practices interview questions right do your research do everything in your power that you can to prepare yourself for an interview obviously you're not going to know exactly what you're going to be asked but you're not you're not going to know exactly how to stations going to go but as long as you do what you can to prepare I think that would really help the nerves right like you did everything in your power to prepare yourself for an interview at this point it's kind of like if it's meant to be it will be you know what I mean bright I see and the okay what's the typical amount of days you have to do on your voluntary work for you to put it on your resume so we tried so you want to make sure you have like at least two months right so too much if you have at least two months of any kind of work experience or volunteer volunteer experience of some sort you can put that on your resume no problem any other questions hey again I'm putting yeah I just we just put it all in at the same time but yeah we both just put at the same time the link to the attendance form for those who may have not filled it out but if you have no other questions thank you again for joining it was a pleasure to have you and we will be sending this PowerPoint to those who filled out the attendance form and yeah that's pretty much it but have a great week if we don't see you have a great summer okay all right bye-bye have a good day thank you thank you for the thank you thank you guys thank you everyone bye bye bye have a good day all right I think if you click the record button it'll stop recording
